Clemens Philippi appointed new deputy head of market management at Allianz Fire and Marine Insurance Japan Ltd.
Important step for Allianz industrial arm AGCS to expand its Japanese business
PRESS RELEASE - Munich/Tokyo. February 3, 2011
Clemens Philippi has joined Allianz Fire and Marine Insurance Japan Ltd. (AZFM) as deputy head of market management. This move is the latest on the part of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS), the industrial arm of the Allianz Group, to strengthen the corporate and specialty focus of its Japan unit and expand its "Asian" footprint.
Philippi, who previously worked for the international broker Aon for the last six years, will be reporting to Yasumasa Kurono, head of market management at AZFM. He will focus on developing client and intermediary relations in the Japanese market and bring his local market know-how into AGCS globally. At Aon, Clemens headed a team in the UK dedicated to servicing Japanese, Chinese and Indian clients and also worked with Japanese clients specifically to develop risk finance and captive solutions. In 2003 he was nominated by the Grand Duke of Luxembourg to be member of a business mission to Japan following an invitation by the Japanese Emperor.
Fluent in German, English and Japanese, Philippi holds a Master’s degree in Japanese studies from the University of Trier, where he minored in business administration and political science. He also studied at Osaka Gakuin University in Japan and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Pacific Studies from Loyola Marymont University in California. During his studies, Philippi worked as a translator and research fellow. He also interned at the Permanent Mission of Germany at the United Nations in New York. A German national, he has lived in the US, UK, Japan and Luxembourg and played semi-professional soccer in various leagues.
"Clemens has a well-rounded background and valuable skill set," says Yasumasa Kurono. "He brings with him extensive Japanese market experience and he will make an important contribution to growing our business in Japan."
In January 2010, AZFM became a subsidiary of AGCS as part of the overall AGCS strategy to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific region. It now has dedicated offices in Australia, Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore and works through the Allianz network throughout the rest of the region to provide cover to its international clients.
