Wooden pallets are universal components for many industries. They also pose a significant fire risk, as demonstrated by this case study.
Over 30,000 pallets, stored outside, were destroyed at this metal packaging manfacturer, in a fire probably caused by arson. However losses were minimized by an effective emergency response plan, and by observing loss prevention rules concerning the storage of pallets.
This bulletin reviews the circumstances of the fire and how the loss was contained, with particular reference to recommendations for minimum safe distances between stored pallets and buildings.
