Fire Safety in Shipyards and Lay-by Berths

Fire safety while a ship is in a shipyard, lay-by berth or dry-dock, especially when repairs require the introduction of "hot work" into the daily routine, should be a primary concern to a ship's master and crew. Simply put, the repair process in general and hot work in particular expose the ship to undue perils at a vulnerable moment when the master is helpless - yet still liable for damages.

This bulletin details the inherent risks involved with hot work activities during shipyard repair and presents specific best practice recommendations for ensuring that such activity does not put the ship in unnecessary peril.
