Carrier Selection Criteria

Before a shipper can move its goods to market, special care must be taken to carefully scrutinize and select an appropriate method of transportation and a reliable carrier, or transportation provider, to move the goods quickly, safely, and at the best rate with minimal risk of damage, loss or theft.

This bulletin guides shippers through the process of carrier selection, knowing that while they cannot always attain the optimum, the best possible solution may be to satisfy their needs and those of the various stakeholders. And while the selection process is prospective (i.e. before the shipper actually contracts with the carrier), once selected, the carrier periodically should be evaluated in order to measure performance.
