Allianz Center for Technology Lessons Learned help optimize wind turbine operation

For a recent study of the Fraunhofer Institute on the topic of condition monitoring for wind turbines, the Allianz Center for Technology (AZT) has provided a significant source of expertise.

Thomas Gellermann from the Allianz Center for Technology (Allianz Zentrum für Technik or AZT), member of the VGB's "European Working Group Wind Energy, has worked together with Fraunhofer Institute IWES* in Bremerhaven in a special research project on the topic of "Condition Monitoring Systems (CMS)". The project was initiated by VGB PowerTech e.V.**

The report gives an overview of the "state of the art" in the field of CMS, looking at existing hardware and software solutions, whilst also providing an insight into current areas of development and information regarding a cost-benefit analysis of the technology.

Thomas Gellermann comments: "I'm pleased that the Allianz Center for Technology was able to supply its expertise for the purposes of further advancing the use of this technology. Moreover, with this study we are assisting operators in the complex search for an optimal, reliable CMS solution. CMS and a suitable condition-based maintenance strategy allow an increased availability. Furthermore, cost-intensive losses that arise as a result of unnoticed and spreading damage can be avoided."
